Retirement is a big deal and just about everyone looks forward to it. But, how do you get the right gift to celebrate this occasion? The ideas below are some great gifts that would be greatly appreciated.
Traveling
One of the things that retiree’s look forward to is the time to travel. Whether the currently travel quite a bit, or are looking to start, these travel tips should give you an idea for a gift.
For The Current Traveler
Get a large map of the world and place markers at every spot you know they have visited. Color code the markers if several spots were on the same trip. Be sure to gift a lot of extra markers for any spots you missed as well as any future spots they visit.
For The Future Traveler
- Find out a spot where they have always wanted to go. Get them a couple of the newest travel guides to the destination. Make sure the guides include maps and recommendations for where to stay, and where to eat. You may need to look through a few at the bookstore until you find ones that have a good mix of information that covers everything.
- Find out if there is a more local spot, such as a day trip, they have been wanting to take. Get them tickets, a coupon, or a gift certificate so they can take the trip soon.
For All Travelers
- If you have the money a cruise is a great gift. You should be sure to include a ticket for their spouse or significant other as well. This could also be a great group gift if the cost is too high for one person.
- Nice luggage. Hard-sided, with wheels that allow them to be turned in all directions are particularly nice. Include a personalized luggage strap; these go around the body of the luggage and makes it easy to see right away who the luggage belongs to.
Other Gifts
- Write to the person’s favorite sports team and request a signed ball. Explain that it’s for a retirement gift and they would love for the whole team to sign; include a ball and a packing slip so they can send it back easily.
- Gift certificate to a continuing education class, such as gardening, cooking, scrapbooking, or Genealogy research.
- Season tickets to their favorite sports team.
- For woman a thoughtful gift could be a charm bracelet with the number of years they have worked before retiring, or worked at a specific company. Or, start the bracelet with a charm of an item you know she likes, such as shoes, knitting, or golf (I know several women who golf, so this isn’t that far fetched!)
- Gift subscriptions to several magazines they don’t already get, centered around a hobby they want to take up, or spend more time doing.
The biggest thing retiree’s look forward to is having the freedom to set their own schedule and divvy up their time how they would like. They have the freedom to spend more time doing hobbies they enjoy, or to take up new ones. Giving a gift that helps them do this is a great idea for retirement.
