Quotes To Harmonize R.O.I.com’s Melody

September 1, 2007 | In Quotes |

I love quotes - snippets of phrase; words of wisdom - they make you stop and take notice. Many besides I have written prose or poetry that seem as if they had read my blog. They have not, but their words fit so well, I’ve collected them for your reading pleasure.

“Power can manipulate, coerce, and destroy. And as long as we are convinced we have none, power will always look negative. In fact, power means simply our capacity to act. From this lens, we each have power - and often, much more power than we think. If we accept ecology’s insights that we exist in densely woven networks, then we must also accept that every choice we make sends out ripples, even if we’re not consciously choosing. So the choice we have is not whether, but only how, we can change the world.”
-Frances Moore Lappe, in Getting a Grip: Clarity, Creativity, and Courage in a World Gone Mad

“The issues that confront us may seem so huge, so complicated, so difficult to deal with that it’s hard to believe that anything we can do will have a meaningful impact. But there are a lot of us in th world. A lot of people doing a lot of little things could have a huge impact. And by doing something, we are also demonstrating that lots of people really do care.”
-Michael Norton, in 365 Ways To Change The World

“When you look back on a lifetime and think of what has been given to the world by your presence, inevitably you think of your art, whatever it may be, as the gift you have make to the world in acknowledgment of the gift you have been given, which is the life itself….That work is not an expression of desire for praise, but the deepest manifestation of your gratitude for the gift of life.”
-Stanley Kunitz

“Our studies demonstrate that if you engage in helping activities as a teen, you will still be reaping health benefits 60 or 70 years later. And no matter when you adopt a giving lifestyle, your well-being will improve. Generous behavior is closely associated with reduced risk of illness and mortality and lower rates of depression. Even more remarkable, giving is linked to traits that undergird a successful life, such as social competence, empathy, and positive emotion.”
-Stephen Post, PhD, and Jill Neimark, in Why Good Things Happen To Good People

Periodically, I’ll more as I find them. In the meantime, are there any others you’ve come across that fit? Please leave them below in the comments.
